9th February 2016: My journey through China began with a magical river cruise along the Pudong at night which is a truly spectacular way to see the futuristic architecture, and although Shanghai wasn't my favourite place in China, it certainly has its merits.
Set out amongst this modern backdrop are luscious historic gardens, museums and fabulous shopping; both designer and bargain, offering you plenty of things to do!
After setting off from Shanghai, we had a short stop in Guilin where I've been told that many Chinese people take their honeymoon and with the towns stunning countryside and waterways, it's easy to see why.
Don't miss out on a Scenic Li River Cruise to Yangshou; a fantastic market town and more family-friendly destination. Guilin also provides you with the chance to watch the famous Cormorant fisherman (although be prepared, it's not quite the same as how the adverts portray it).
After Guilin, a flight to Xian took us to where I had my most memorable experiences. Of course the famous site here is the Terracotta Warriors; one of the most significant excavations of the 20th century. You really can't appreciate the skill involved, the variety of military ranks used and the overall scale of the sites until you're there seeing them for yourself.

The farmers that discovered the first warrior's head have somewhat of a celebrity status now and regularly go to the site to sign autographs.
Xian is the former-ancient capital of China and we were treated to a traditional feast of dumplings where we found it fascinating that the same menu that was presented to an emperor of the time dynasty is still used today.
My ultimate highlight in Xian was tandem-cycling around the 14th century city ramparts at sunset – an immensely atmospheric experience and lots of fun! Just watch out for the potholes!
Our last city stop on the trip was Beijing (a culture vulture's paradise) and many would say we saved the best until last. The famous sites here include the infamous Great Wall of China (a 'pinch me' moment), The Forbidden Palace, The Temple of Heaven and the beautiful Summer Palace.
China is a captivating country full of colourful culture that has so much to offer and I can't wait to return and discover more!
Top Tip: I flew to Shanghai via BA business class flight and I would always recommend checking the cost of flight upgrades as they can be expensive but you also never know when there could be a special seat sale on!
