Exploring Canada: From Niagara to Ottawa

Our First Morning in Niagara

Intro

What an amazing start to our trip! We were up early and enjoyed a delightful breakfast at the charming Old Sonte Inn Boutique Hotel, just a short stroll from Niagara Falls. When you are walking towards the falls the noise, sound and the sight is hard to put into words the sheer power and beauty — photos barely do them justice They need to be seen to be believed. Next, we experienced the Niagara Flight Simulation, a thrilling virtual flight over the region that also shared fascinating stories of history, local battles, and Indigenous culture.

An unforgettable introduction to this stunning part of Canada. After all that excitement, it was time for a well-earned lunch before our next adventure!

An Unforgettable Afternoon at Niagara

After lunch, we explored the old Niagara Power Plant, which is now a visitor attraction. Once the region’s powerhouse, it blends history, engineering, and again inspiring views perfectly. The highlight was walking through the massive tunnel that leads right beneath the falls — feeling the thunder of the water from below was simply breathtaking.

And then came the ultimate surprise: a helicopter ride over Niagara Falls! Seeing the cascading water from above was an experience I’ll never forget.

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Nestled in southern Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake sits on the shores of Lake Ontario, where the Niagara River meets the lake. This charming town is famous for its wineries. With its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, Niagara-on-the-Lake is a delightful stop for anyone exploring the Niagara region.

A Final Farewell to Niagara

Pictures and video can only hint at the power, magic and sound of Niagara Falls. They do not do this wonder of the world any justice. I kept thinking that nothing was going to come close to this over the next few days – WOW was I wrong!

Goodbye Niagara, Hello Toronto!

Toronto welcomed us with a huge burst of hustle and Bustle; a guided city tour by minibus, showcasing key neighbourhoods and landmarks. Before our tour began, we wandered around the corner from the perfect located Chelsea Hotel – (where we watched the start of the Toronto marathon on Sunday) and found a cute little English pub “The Queen and Beaver”

Our first tour stop was Casa Loma, a castle built in 1914 and a popular film location for Hollywood productions. Its grand halls and towers also host events and weddings — talk about a dramatic backdrop!

Next, we visited St. Lawrence Market and the nearby Distillery District. From food tours to tasting sessions, these spots are absolute musts. The cakes, Olives, Cheese, Oysters/Fish and especially the curry mustard.

A Magical Final Evening in Toronto

Toronto is amazing. We explored Little Canada, a miniature wonderland showcasing all of Canada’s provinces, complete with day and night displays. Another little suprise by our host Brian was Getting “shrunk” via a 3D photo, which is printed, hand-painted, and placed within the scene. Can’t wait to see me as a mini me!

Later, we strolled and took the subway to the CN Tower. The city is so easy to navigate and seeing it at night is spectacular — passing the famous dog fountain. Dinner at the 360 Restaurant at the top of the tower, which offered incredible views and a perfect final night in Toronto.

Discovering Kingston – A Hidden Gem

Kingston might be small, but it’s full of character. Easily reached by VIA Rail from Toronto, it’s perfect for a stop on the way to Ottawa. The town square is beautiful, the waterfront has a lovely open space, and there are plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants.

We visited Bellevue House, home of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. The tour was a balance of history — celebrating his achievements while also confronting the harsh realities of laws affecting Indigenous families and residential schools.

The Kingston Penitentiary was a favourite stop — learning about prison life. Movie buffs might recognise it from Jack Reacher and The Mayor of Kingstown.

We also explored Fort Henry, the Royal Military College, and the Military Communications Museum, all rich in history. To finish the day, we joined a ghost walk, discovering Kingston’s haunted past — from hangings to sailors buried in town.

From Kingston to Ottawa – Helicopters, Boats & Laughter

Ottawa was full of adventure. First, a helicopter flight over the 1000 Islands, which I got to do twice! Home of the famous Thousand Island dressing. Boldt Castle from the air and then from a boat cruise in Rockport was truly stunning, just like a fairytale. We were so lucky to experience this is so many ways.

The Grand Finale: Ottawa & Reflections on an Incredible Trip

Ottawa was a whirlwind National Gallery of Canada, Canadian Museum of History, city tours, food tours of ByWard Market, and a fascinating visit to Chateau Laurier.

The Royal Canadian Mint — both fun and educational. Learning that they produce all the investment pieces, and the everyday coins are produced in Winnipeg.

Ottawa is surprisingly walkable, and our stay at the Lord Elgin Hotel made sightseeing effortless. Both it and the Chateau Laurier are stunning examples of Art Deco elegance.

Before heading home, we stopped in the cute town of Chelsea, Quebec, the gateway to Gatineau Park, perfect for kayaking, ziplining, scenic walks, and even skiing in winter. The town is charming, with bars, restaurants, a distillery, and a fabulous hotel with spacious apartments. Only a 15-minute drive to Ottawa where you can have it all the Country and City vibe.
