15th March 2017: During my visit to the sunny Caribbean, I travelled to the beautiful country of Antigua. Upon arrival, I stayed at the aptly named Blue Waters Hotel on Soldiers Bay. Only eight hours from London on a direct BA flight, it was wonderful to escape the cold British winter and enjoy some relaxing downtime in a mini paradise!
Location
The hotel is 25 minutes from the airport and only 15 minutes from the capital, St John - Ideal for a bit of duty free shopping. But remember to take your passport!
Hotel
Blue Waters Hotel is flanked by sandy shores on either side and its sheltered waters are ideal for swimming, snorkelling or sailing. There are seven pools to choose from and none are ever crowded. It’s a gorgeous venue for weddings, with a lovely gazebo on a peninsula, and the staff ensure the right atmosphere, planning every detail and ensuring your occasion is perfect. The staff at this family run establishment go the extra mile to make sure your visit is flawless.
Restaurants
A stone’s throw away is the Palm Restaurant, which is ideal for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as its lovely outside space is airy in feel. However, my favourite eateries were Bartleys, situated on the premises and with a super menu, or my absolute favourite; the Cove Restaurant, a special treat, especially the lobster, completed with a fabulous setting overlooking the sea. If you stay on all-inclusive basis you'll get a credit towards using the Cove Restaurant. In my opinion it's well worth the visit and any extra!
Spa
The Cove suites are an exclusive section of the hotel complete with modern spacious rooms and a private pool area - very handy for the spa. The spa itself is set in a quiet location with super sea views and a plunge pool. I had a superb relaxing massage with Elemis products at a reasonable price for the Caribbean. 17 acres of lush gardens surround the spa, perfect for a stroll through the bougainvillea after dinner.
Experiences
The travel concierge at the hotel can arrange taxis, catamaran trips around the island (highly recommended) and my favourite trip to Shirley Heights for the reggae reggae night. Usually on a Sunday, you'll get to experience the sunset with a BBQ on a clifftop, overlooking English harbour while listening to a steel band. Bliss! And, after dark, the reggae party starts; the atmosphere is electric with everyone singing along to their favourite Bob Marley tune.
If you want a top quality sunny break I would highly recommend a visit to Antigua as the welcome is as warm as the water.
