All about Bernadette

I’ve always had a strong passion for travelling, and after living abroad for a significant portion of my life, I’m excited to start my new role as a Travel Specialist in Miles Morgan Travel’s Trowbridge branch.

I’m originally from North Wales, but I was eager to fly the nest and travel the world. At the age of twenty-one, the opportunity arose to work in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I grabbed it with both hands and spent the next twenty-five years based in various countries within the Middle East. It’s a fascinating part of the world, rich in history and culture.

I was fortunate enough to live in Oman for seven years, and I can honestly say that it’s one of the most diverse and picturesque countries in the Middle East. There are deserts covering thousands of miles; mountains that are capped with snow each winter; oases and lagoons for camping and swimming; and clear blue waters perfect for snorkelling. I spent much of my time in the sea when I lived there. I swam in lagoons with turtles and stingrays at Masirah Island, explored caves in Nizwa, and unbelievably, made snowballs in the mountains of Jebel Akhdar in the wintertime. I loved the centuries-old markets: Mutrah Souq in Muscat and the silver market in Nizwa are two of my favourites.

Egypt is a fabulous country. I spent a lot of time in the land of the Pharaohs, and I think it’s one of the most mysterious destinations in the world. I loved visiting Egypt, from taking breathtaking Nile cruises to exploring Abu Simbel and the Temple of Ramesses, diving in the Red Sea, sampling freshly-caught seafood in Alexandra and, of course, Cairo and its pyramids. There’s so much history and culture to experience. Even walking through markets teeming with shops and stalls, drinking sweetened tea in a glass cup, I felt that I was experiencing something unique and special.

Closer to home, I have a soft spot for Italy. I particularly enjoy travelling by train across the country, and have visited Rome, Florence and Venice many times! There are so many exciting excursions to take in Italy: some of my favourites have been driving a locally-hired Fiat 500 through Tuscany and treating myself to lunch and a glass of wine in a beautiful vineyard. Florence is my favourite Italian city: lined with cobblestones, it’s decked with romantic charm, art and culture. It was at the heart of the Renaissance Era, and today it’s a treasure trove of some of the world’s greatest masterpieces as well as museums, where tourists can learn about the intriguing politics of the time. I couldn’t recommend it more.

In the winter months, I like to ski! Courchevel, a beautiful resort nestled in the French Alps, is a favourite of mine. It has a mixture of slopes for different levels of ability. I’m still on the blues and greens, but I’m getting better each time I visit! Other highlights for me include taking a ride on the Les Verdons Gondola for stunning panoramic views of the snow-covered peaks; I look forward to it every time I visit! A picturesque ski village called La Croisette is at the heart of the resort, a bustling area filled with shops and restaurants. It’s perfect for a glass of wine after a long day on the slopes!

Next on my list is the Far East, an area I’m yet to explore. I can’t wait for a chance to travel there and sample the local history and culture.
