Day 1–2: A Warm Welcome in Negombo
Our journey began in the charming coastal town of Negombo, a perfect entry point to Sri Lanka’s vibrant culture. The colonial architecture, palm-fringed shores, and buzzing fish markets gave us an immediate taste of the country's rich heritage and seaside charm. Riviera’s expert guide made sure we didn’t miss a beat, sharing insights into daily Sri Lankan life and setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
Day 3–4: The Cultural Triangle – Ancient Cities and Sacred Sites
We headed inland to explore the Cultural Triangle, and wow—this region is a treasure trove of ancient wonders. Climbing the Sigiriya Rock Fortress was unforgettable. As we ascended the 1,200 steps, the views became more and more spectacular, and reaching the summit felt like a true achievement. The ancient frescoes and the engineering marvel of this 5th-century citadel were mind-blowing.
We also visited Dambulla’s cave temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with intricate murals and golden statues of the Buddha. Each cave was more breathtaking than the last, and it was easy to feel a deep sense of peace and reverence in this sacred place.
Day 5–6: Kandy – Culture, Spice, and Ceremony
In the hill capital of Kandy, we were treated to a captivating cultural show and an atmospheric visit to the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s holiest shrines. As dusk fell and the chants echoed through the air, it was impossible not to feel moved.
We also visited a spice garden where we learned about the local herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine. The cinnamon tea and head massages were a treat! And of course, no trip to Kandy would be complete without strolling around the serene lake and browsing the lively markets.
Day 7: Tea Country
All aboard the coach as we travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya was a definite highlight. Rolling through lush tea plantations and misty mountains, it was like something out of a movie. We toured a tea factory, tasted the freshest brew imaginable, and learned what goes into making that perfect cup of Ceylon tea.
Nuwara Eliya, nicknamed "Little England," charmed us with its colonial architecture, rose gardens, and cooler climate. It felt like a world away from the tropical lowlands.
Day 8–9: Safari Thrills in Yala National Park
Things got wild in Yala! We ventured out on safari in search of leopards, elephants, and crocodiles. While the elusive leopards played hard to find, we were lucky enough to spot not just one but three!
Watching elephants roam freely and birds in their natural habitat was a powerful reminder of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity.
Day 10–11: Relaxation in Galle and the South Coast
We wrapped up our journey in the colonial city of Galle, where the old Dutch Fort has stood strong for centuries. Cobblestone streets, artisan boutiques, and charming cafés made for a relaxed and picturesque final stop. Watching the sunset over the fort’s ramparts was the perfect ending to our Sri Lankan story.
