I recently had the chance to spend the day onboard Holland America Line’s MS Rotterdam, and I have to say, I really liked it. From the moment I stepped onboard, the staff were so friendly and welcoming – it instantly had that comfortable, relaxed feel.
The ship itself is lovely. It’s got a really nice style without being too over-the-top. There are some lovely Art Deco touches dotted around, and it’s all been well looked after.
There’s loads of space to wander around – I had a look through B.B. King’s Blues Club, which looks like a great spot for evening music, plus the casino, library, quiet lounges, and even a little area with board games and jigsaws. It’s got a nice mix of things going on, whether you want to be sociable or just find a quieter corner.
I had a look at a balcony cabin – it’s very clean and is a good size – but what surprised me the most was the inside cabin. It was really spacious, cosy, and didn’t feel cramped at all, which you don’t often see. It’s definitely a good option if you’re after something both budget-friendly and comfortable.
Up on the top deck, there are two pickleball courts, a jogging track, and a few other spots to be active.
When it comes to pools, there are two onboard. The midship Lido pool has a retractable roof, so it works whether the weather’s good or not. Then there’s the Sea View Pool at the back of the ship, which is fully open – perfect for sunny sea days.
I also took a look at The Retreat, which is the Cabana Hire, so if you wanted your own private area you can hire the cabanas, which included extras including the Strawberrys dipped in chocolate, frozen grapes and sparking fizz! Who wouldn't want to experience this!
Food-wise, there’s a bit of everything. You’ve got the buffet, a poolside BBQ and ice cream bar, a few speciality restaurants, and the main dining room, which felt really elegant – especially if you get a seat by the big windows. They also cater well for passengers’ dietary needs, which is always handy.
All in all, I really enjoyed being onboard MS Rotterdam. It’s got a good mix of elegance and comfort, without feeling too formal. There’s a bit of history behind the ship too, and they do some pretty unique itineraries – especially in Alaska, which I’d love to experience one day.
If you’re thinking about cruising with Holland America or want to know more about this ship, just give me a shout – happy to chat more about it.
