Day 4: Cadiz, Spain
Cadiz - one of Europe's most ancient cities - hugs Andalusia’s sunlit Atlantic coast and is characterised by palm trees, lookout towers and weathered old buildings. Now into its fourth millennium, Cádiz's fascinating Old Town district is home to huge stone walls from the 1500s and the beautifully crafted 18th century Cádiz Cathedral.
Day 5: Malaga, Spain
In the fabulous city of Malaga – the birthplace of Picasso – visit the Moorish Alcazaba Fortress, try authentic Spanish tapas or take a tour to Granada and the Alhambra Palace. This 14th century structure, is Spain’s finest expression of Moorish art.
Day 6: Valencia, Spain
Best known as the birthplace of paella, Valencia has steadily moved onto the radar of savvy travelers. It's a vibrant, friendly, mildly chaotic place with two outstanding fine-arts museums, an accessible old quarter, Europe's newest cultural and scientific complex – and one of Spain's most exciting nightlife scenes. Whole sections of the old city, for example the Carmen Quarter, have been extensively renovated. One of the best spots for exploring Valencia's history is at the museum L'Almoina, which opened three years ago in the Carmen on the site where Valencia was founded by the Romans in 138 B.C. Here, you can walk over glass floors, looking down at a stunning assemblage of ruins excavated in the area. The exhibition includes Roman baths, tombs and a medieval Moorish ward for plague victims.
Day 7 & 8: Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Flirt with Flamenco in this beautiful town, the capital of Mallorca. Try tapas or wine tasting or explore the city by bike with an expert guide. Be inspired by the magnificent Santa María Cathedral, a 13th century Gothic landmark overlooking the Bay of Palma, or visit the Almudaina, a Moorish-style Arab fortress, or medieval Bellver Castle. Enjoy swimming, sailing, diving or snorkelling in Palma de Mallorca too.
